Sandnes Norway

Sandnes is a city and municipality in Rogaland County, Norway. It is part of the Jæren region. Sandnes was separated from Hoyland as its own municipality in 1860, and obtained city status the same year. On January 1, 1965, the rural townships of Hoyland and the Hole, as well as parts of Hetland, merged with Sandnes. The city owes its name to an old farm ("Sandnæs" 1723), as the town was built on its land. The first element is sand, which means "sand" or "beach", the last element is ne meaning "tip". The coat of arms was granted on April 21, 1972. The shield shows a piece of pottery, pottery was one of the major industries in the 18th century.
